Custom rubber formulations

Formulating an elastomer-based recipe is both a science and an art that starts with choosing from among hundreds of ingredients.

In addition to having access to a library of over 900 recipes, our skilled chemists and technicians have extensive experience in the development of new, customized formulas. Regardless of the component type or application, our superior formulations will result in a high-performance, quality compound at a competitive price.

For general applications, our rubber compounds are produced using a wide range of natural and synthetic rubbers such as NR, SBR, EPDM, CR and NBR.

Our high-performance rubbers such as HNBR, VMQ, FVMQ, FKM, AEM, ACM are specially designed to meet the most stringent product requirements.

The art of mixing

The mixing procedure is a critical part of polymer chemistry and has a major impact on the quality of the final product. Improper mixing can compromise component performance.

That is why we pay meticulous attention to each step of the mixing process, ensuring outstanding product:

  • Ingredients for each batch are precisely measured and carefully combined.
  • All mixes are consistent from batch to batch.
Your one-stop component shop

We are proud to be one of the few companies in North America with the expertise, facilities, and technology to meet all your component needs:

  • We design, formulate, mix and mill sought-after quality batches for both black and colored compounds.
  • Our integrated facilities mean that we are able to substantially reduce production times, provide excellent quality control, and keep costs low.
Streamlined processes
We have extensive experience in various molding and overmolding processes for elastomer parts:
  • Compression Molding: a process typically used for components that require harder durometer rubber or high abrasion resistance.
  • Transfer Molding: used for small components that require a high degree of precision or aesthetic qualities.
  • Injection Molding: a process that typically meets a wider range of technical requirements and is cost efficient for high volume parts.
We also design molds that eliminate the need for secondary processes such as de-flashing or tear-trimming--ideal for parts that are designed for aesthetic as well as function.

OUR EXPERTISE

OUR EXPERTISE

Noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) pictogram

NVH: NOISE, VIBRATION & HARSHNESS

Our engineers have a deep understanding of materials and how their physical and mechanical properties influence the design of vibration control. We produce components that optimize geometry and the science of rubber compounding in order to meet the most demanding specifications. We carefully assess the best methods for mitigating vibrations. Our control process includes:

  • Vibration and load analysis to reduce the transmission of vibration.
  • Addition of a barrier or insulator to interrupt the path of noise and vibration.
  • Specially designed noise absorbers or mass absorbers reduce the scale of vibration.

POLYMER ENGINEERING & CHEMISTRY

The key to a successful rubber compound lies in its formulation of a multitude of ingredients. Each ingredient and additive is carefully chosen to ensure compatibility with the elastomer and its particular composition of odorants, color pigments and flame retardants.

Resistance to fuel, oil, acids, alkalines, weather, UV agents, ozone, heat, flame and wear, as well as low-temperature flexibility and gas impermeability are all chemical properties and conditions that will dictate the choice of compounds.

Chemical ingredients play a very specific role in achieving the compound’s desired physical properties including static and dynamic stiffness, fatigue and tear resistance.

MATERIAL & PRODUCT CHARACTERIZATION

A component’s performance is based on two main criteria, namely its mechanical properties and its durability. We carry out extensive testing to make sure the materials have the right properties to support your component’s application. Our rigorous testing process includes:

  • Characterization of elastomer materials (non-linear behavior).
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Product characterization to confirm mechanical behavior.
  • Physical performance testing to evaluate product longevity.

We can assist you in determining static or dynamic stiffness, damping coefficient, transmissibility, or any other physical measure.

BONDING

The hundreds of millions of parts processed in our factories over the last 20 years testify to our expertise in rubber to metal bonding with low-VOC adhesives.

Thanks to our extensive knowledge in adhesives and bonding techniques, we create high-performing parts by combining the mechanical strength of a rigid structure (metal or plastic insert) with the flexibility of elastomers.

Our technicians will work with you to provide solutions to your bonding challenges. For example, adhesives can be used to provide increased protection against corrosion without adding extra steps to insert preparation.

MOLDING/ OVERMOLDING

Soucy Baron has proven expertise in rubber and silicone overmolding, which consist of bonding elastomers to a metal or plastic sub-straight to meet the part's performance specifications and improve its structural properties. Our commitment to excellence means that we use:

  • Steel, for its cost.
  • Stainless steel, for its resistance to corrosion.
  • Aluminum, for its lightness.
  • Thermoplastics inserts compatible to rubber bonding where required.

Using either compression, injection or transfer techniques, overmolding reduces time and costs to our customers by reducing any additional assembly or secondary operations.

The overmolding process ensures the final manufactured component has the desired physical and mechanical properties needed for its application.
